Having a part-time job when you’re going to school is hard enough…
But what if your job expects you to pull 13-hour days, multiple times per week?!
Sounds like a plan for disaster for both your sleep habits… and your gains.
This is definitely a challenge, but this also describes a typical week for fitness YouTuber Marselis Scott of M.S. Fitness.
Not only does he have a steadily growing fitness channel, but he’s a full-time student, and works a demanding job all at the same time.
I’ve had a back and forth with him over the last few weeks and I’m still in awe…
If you’re wondering, I came across Marselis by browsing YouTube and found this video below from his channel.
After watching that, I knew that he had more awesome advice to give and I wanted to make sure you heard it!
So, here’s a short interview with Marselis Scott explaining how he makes it all work.
Start of Interview
I understand you have a pretty busy schedule… Can you describe your typical week for me?
My typical schedule is Monday morning I go straight from my 13 hour weekend job to home to take a shower, and then right to class at 9:25 which I have only one class on Mondays.
Tuesday I have a class at 8am then another at 10:50 until 12:05. I try to get a lift in either in the evening or night. Sometimes it’s late when I workout, because I’ll have to study.
Wednesday is the same schedule as Monday.
Thursday is the same as Tuesday.
I workout Monday- Friday sometimes Sunday.
My work schedule is Friday thru Sunday from 6:00pm until 7:30am so right around 13 in a half hours each day of the weekend.
It gets hard I have to try to manage YouTube, gym time, school, and I have to try to do homework or study.
How do you keep your motivation so high to continue such a hectic schedule?
The best way I motivate myself during a hectic schedule is I watch videos about motivation, and I always think to myself if I get through all of this I’ll be successful.
Plus making my parents happy is what motivates me. I want to be a son that they are proud of one day.
I have a passion for trying to reach my dreams, and being busy isn’t going to stop me.
Do you have any problems getting enough sleep? If so, how do you overcome it?
Yes, I have trouble going to sleep at night.
Having to try to cram a workout in, study, do homework, record/edit YouTube videos, is pretty hectic at times.
I usually only get 5 maybe 6 hours a sleep a night. So I usually get at least an hour nap or two hour nap in everyday.
Just being positive helps me to stay on track.
In one of your videos, you mention how you don’t need to have a long workout for it to be effective. Can you give an example of a short workout and explain why it’s still effective?
I try to do super sets, because you’re knocking out two exercises at once.
I thinks it’s more effective for if you have a busy schedule or want to bring more volume or intensity to your workout.
I try to go in the gym at a time none of my buddies are there especially on a busy day, so I can get my workout done within 45 minutes to an hour.
What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting to jump into a schedule like yours? They also have to work, go to school, and find time to train. What would you tell them?
Try to stay motivated at all times.
Surround yourself around people that will in courage you too not give up.
I think of it like this you only get one life so why not give your all, so then in 4 years when school is over you will have the degree you always wanted and a great paying job.
